We are seeking an experienced Engineering Design Manager to lead our engineering design teams supporting key utility distribution and infrastructure programs, while driving both project success and team excellence.

Job Description:

The Engineering Design Manager is responsible for leading, developing, and managing large engineering design teams supporting electric utility programs. This role oversees technical execution, production performance, quality, financial performance, and continuous process improvement across multiple projects and clients.

The ideal candidate combines a strong technical background in utility engineering design with proven skills in people leadership, operational execution, and financial management.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a multidisciplinary engineering design organization of 80+ engineers, designers, coordinators, and technical staff
  • Build a high performing culture focused on safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Develop employee goals, conduct performance evaluations, and provide clear, actionable feedback
  • Support hiring, onboarding, training, succession planning, and professional development

Engineering & Project Execution

  • Oversee planning, execution, and delivery of electric utility engineering design projects
  • Ensure designs meet client standards, industry codes, and regulatory requirements
  • Establish and maintain engineering workflows, standards, and SOPs
  • Partner with QA and technical leadership to ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality of deliverables
  • Resolve complex technical and procedural challenges escalated from design teams

Operational & Performance Management

  • Develop and manage KPIs related to production, quality, schedule, and cost performance
  • Monitor workload, staffing capacity, and resource allocation across programs
  • Proactively identify risks, constraints, and performance gaps and implement corrective actions
  • Lead regular project and program reviews with internal and external stakeholders

Financial & Business Management

  • Own financial performance for assigned programs, including budget tracking and P&L accountability
  • Ensure efficient utilization of engineering resources while meeting financial targets
  • Support estimating, forecasting, and cost control activities
  • Align engineering execution with contract requirements and client expectations

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as a senior point of contact for utility clients and internal leadership
  • Collaborate with project managers, operations, and business development teams
  • Communicate status, risks, and performance clearly and professionally

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in electric utility engineering design or related utility infrastructure work
  • Proven experience managing large engineering or technical teams
  • Strong understanding of utility distribution and/or transmission design workflows
  • Demonstrated experience with production management, quality control, and operational metrics
  • Experience with budget management, forecasting, and P&L responsibility
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast paced, multi program environment

Preferred Experience

  • Utility distribution design, resiliency programs, or system hardening initiatives
  • Familiarity with relevant industry codes and standards (NESC, IEC, NEC, etc.)
  • Multi-client or portfolio level program management
  • Process improvement and operational scaling in engineering environments
